What is the deadline for submission?

The submission deadline for the Spring Call is 1 April and for the Autumn Call 1 October.

In what language may I write the application – Danish or English?

It depends on the funding instrument. The application can be written in Danish or English unless otherwise specified in the guidelines.

What are the requirements to the project description?

What is a “strong connection to Danish research”?

We are not able to define what a “strong connection to Danish research” is, as it would be up to the Carlsberg Foundation’s board to decide, whether your connection is sufficiently strong.

I am in doubt whether my project is bordering between basic research and applied research?

According to the Foundation Charter, the Carlsberg Foundation exclusively supports basic research in the fields of natural science, social science and the humanities. The foundation defines the sciences in alignment with the ERC. The board will assess on an individual basis whether a proposed project falls into the "basic research" category.

Can the application / appendixes exceed the required length when there are multiple applicants?

No. The requirements for the length of the application are described in the guidelines regardless of the number of applicants.

Can I submit more than one application?

Can I apply for more than one type of funding instrument in the same application?

No.

Is there an earliest or latest start date for the project?

Spring Call: The earliest start date is 1 August, and the latest start date is 1 January the following year. *Except Visiting Fellowships at University of Oxford. Check the guidelines for further information. 

Autumn Call: The earliest start date is 1 January, and the latest start date is 1 September. *Except Semper Ardens: Advance and Visiting Fellowships at University of Oxford. Check the guidelines for further information.

Does the Carlsberg Foundation support life science and to which extent do you support medical studies?

The Carlsberg Foundation supports hypothesis-driven basic research within all life sciences addressing fundamental biological issues. The foundation does not support clinical trials and patient-near research.

What is the requirement for the age of my PhD?

The requirements for the age of the PhD are described in the guidelines
Any periods of leave will be accepted as extensions of this time limit (maternity leave, paternity leave, family care leave, illness, military service, etc.). In the case of maternity leave, the number of months on leave, times two, will be deducted from the seniority.
The specific dates for the period of leave must be clearly stated in the CV.

I have not yet obtained my PhD at the time of the application deadline. Can I still apply?

The applicant must hold a PhD degree or must have received the assessment of the PhD thesis before the application deadline.

I wish to apply for an Internationalisation Fellowship. Can I also apply for operating expenses?

No, the Internationalisation Fellowships are granted as fixed rates (DKK 450,000 per year, if the grant holder is travelling alone and DKK 525,000 per year, if the grant holder is travelling with children).

I wish to apply for an Internationalisation Fellowship. Are there any requirements to what the Carlsberg Foundation considers leading international research institutions?

Has the Carlsberg Foundation made any requirements regarding teaching in connection to a grant?

The Carlsberg Foundation expects you to use your time on the project, for which the foundation has granted you funding.

Can maternity leave be deducted from the PhD age?

Do I qualify for the Reintegration Fellowship having obtained my PhD abroad and does this count as a research stay?

In order to qualify for the Reintegration Fellowship, the applicant must be a postdoc returning to Denmark after a longer research stay abroad. Obtaining your PhD abroad does not qualify as a research stay.

Do I need to be a tenured associate professor to apply?

To be eligible to apply, you must be a newly appointed tenured associate professor. Furthermore, you cannot be more than two years into your tenured position.

Is it possible to include salaries for postdocs in the application?

Yes, you can include salaries and operating expenses for both postdocs and PhD students in the application.

Is it possible to include tuition fee for PhD students?

Yes.

What are the requirements for a ”tenured” position?

Applicants in tenured positions, financed by external funding will not be eligible to apply for the three Semper Ardens instruments. Furthermore, the applicant must be in a tenured position at a Danish research institution.

What is meant by “establishing corpora”?

To build ones’ corpus is used within the humanities, and it refers to building a text corpus (a collection of mechanically readable texts, serving a specific purpose).

Should I include VAT in my budget, when applying for funding for research infrastructure?

If the administrator is a state institution, VAT should not be included in the budget.

Is it possible to apply for fees, gifts for presenters and post-conference dinners/activities?

No.

Is it possible to apply for funding for a conference held abroad?

No.

Can I include funding for “Open Access” in the budget?

I cannot include my recommendation, because my reference prefers to send it directly to the foundation. Is it possible to e-mail the recommendation directly to you?

Yes, the recommendation can be e-mailed to the foundation at: cfgrant@carlsbergfoundation.dk no later than 1 October.

Is it possible for me to send any appendices to you after the deadline?

No.

Do I get a confirmation that my application has been received?

Yes, shortly after you have submitted your application, you will receive an e-mail with a confirmation that the Carlsberg Foundation has received your application.

Will I be able to see my application as an assembled PDF file?

You will be able to view your application as a complete PDF file in CF-Grant.

I have submitted my application, but I have discovered an error. Can I submit a new application?

No, but you can retract your application and edit it until 1 October.

I have submitted my application but I have discovered that I am missing an appendix. Can I send it to you via email?

No, but you can retract your application and edit it until 1 October. After this, it is not possible to edit the application.
