Algorithmic Support for Legal Decision Making (A-LEX)

Field Trips / Research Stays >100,000

Summary

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to automate decisions in both the public and private sector. Such use may enhance effectiveness and reduce cost, but can also compromise rule-of-law principles. Therefore, there is a need for new knowledge about how legal decision-making can be supported by artificial intelligence in a way that promotes compliance with rule-of-law principles. A-LEX explores how a new form of artificial intelligence called Graphic Neural Networks can support automated retrieval of relevant legal information and bring this to the attention of human decision makers. The aim is to investigate how such a system can enable a collaboration between artificial and human intelligence in legal decision-making and enhance compliance with the rule-of-law.
