Bioinspired smart materials as novel underwater adhesives with self-healing ability

Other Postdoctoral Fellowships

What

The 21st century grand challenges include solving problems in connection with energy, health, education, and the environment.

Why

Biology has evolved a large number of advanced materials that inspire researchers for new avenues for materials design. There is in particular a need for smart materials that can repair themselves (self-healing). These would be of great use in a number of applications, e.g. in biomedical devices or flexible electronics.

How

The bioinspired materials platform will be developed in two main ways: (A) we will formulate coacervates of polymers containing DOPA or other catechols for facile application to the target surface and (B) imbuing the formed gel adhesive with improved mechanical and chemical capabilities through further functionalization.
