The Carlsberg Foundation supports basic research within natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities according to the Foundation Charter, Sect. 9.1. “Basic research” is in this context interpreted to mean curiosity-driven experimental or theoretical work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge of the underlying foundations of phenomena and observable facts. In this manner, basic research analyzes properties, structures, and relationships with a view to formulating and testing hypotheses, theories, or laws.
Apart from supporting basic research directly, the Carlsberg Foundation also provides support for communication of basic research aimed at non-scientific audiences.
The Carlsberg Foundation therefore does not support, for example, clinical trials, or technical applied research. In case of doubt, the board will assess on an individual basis whether a proposed project falls into the "basic research" category.
The Carlsberg Foundation does not provide support for overhead.
