In the human body, cellular environments are complex, anisotropic, and mostly three dimensional. Maskless projection lithography systems based on spatial light modulators have been introduced for protein printing. In this approach, proteins can be rapidly patterned on the sample with high spatial resolution, precisely controllable density and easy alignment to sample structures. Maskless photolithography system for protein micropatterning allows in vitro fabrication of substrates to mimic these conditions has important application for efficient drug screening, building complex tissue engineered constructs and investigating fundamental cellular physiology.
