Purpose
The purpose of Semper Ardens Advance is to provide 5 years of funding for individual researchers or research teams to support visionary research projects at the highest international level aiming for scientific breakthroughs. Projects that venture into new scientific territory, potentially involving strong synergies between different research groups, environments, or fields, whether national or international, will be given priority. A researcher may only receive a Semper Ardens Advance grant once. Researchers who have previously received a Semper Ardens Advance grant are not eligible to apply or to participate as team members in a new Semper Ardens Advance application.
Who?
It is possible to apply for Semper Ardens Advance either as an individual applicant or a team of 2-4 applicants.
Individual applications
Individual applicants must be professors with an established international research profile and must hold a tenured professorship at one or more Danish, Greenlandic, or Faroese research institutions at the application deadline and throughout the grant period. The position must correspond to at least 80% FTE (full-time equivalent).
The foundation expects applicants to dedicate at least 50% of their active research time to the project throughout the grant period. This includes scientific leadership, supervision, mentoring, and direct involvement in the project’s research activities.
While parts of the project may be carried out at collaborating international institutions, the majority of the research activities must take place in Denmark, Greenland, or the Faroe Islands.
Eligible research institutions are:
- Universities
- State-owned museums
- State-approved museums that apply the research career structure used by state-owned museums
- Sector research institutions
- Institutions of artistic higher education
- VIVE, DIIS, GEUS, the Defence Academy, the Danish Institute in Rome, the Danish Institute in Athens, provided that they apply the research career structure used by universities.
The following institutions are not eligible:
- Hospitals
- University Colleges
Research team applications
Applications may also be submitted by a research team consisting of 2 – 4 applicants.
The main applicant must be a professor with an established international research profile and must hold a tenured professorship at one or more Danish, Greenlandic, or Faroese research institutions at the application deadline and throughout the grant period. The position must correspond to at least 80% FTE.
All additional team members must hold a tenured position as associate professor, senior researcher, professor WSR, research professor, or professor at one or more Danish, Greenlandic, or Faroese research institutions. Their positions must correspond to at least 80% FTE at the application deadline and throughout the grant period.
The foundation expects all team members to dedicate at least 50% of their active research time to the project throughout the grant period. This includes scientific leadership, supervision, mentoring, and direct involvement in the project’s research activities.
While parts of the project may be carried out at collaborating international institutions, the majority of the research activities must take place in Denmark, Greenland, or the Faroe Islands.
All team members are expected to contribute actively to the scientific direction and leadership of the project. The application must describe how responsibilities, decision-making, and scientific collaboration will be organised throughout the project period.
For administrative purposes, one applicant must be designated as the main applicant. The main applicant is responsible for communication with the foundation and overall grant administration. In research team applications, this role does not imply seniority or hierarchical leadership within the team.

What?
The total amount applied for must be between DKK 15 million and DKK 25 million.
Semper Ardens Advance is awarded as a flexible framework grant intended to support the research activities necessary to realise the proposed project.
Projects must start no earlier than 1 January 2027 and no later than 1 September 2027.
The following running costs may be applied for:
- Consumables
- Equipment
- Travel, research stays, inviting researchers, conferences, research leadership courses or similar
The following salary costs may be applied for:
- Salaries for postdoctoral fellows
- Salaries and tuition fees for PhD students (enrolment of the PhD students at a Danish PhD graduate school is required)
- Salary for a research assistant for up to 12 months during the project period
- Salary for a project coordinator for up to 12 months during the project period
- Salaries for student assistants
It is not possible to apply for salary costs for assistant professors.
