Editor and Press AdvisorThe Carlsberg Foundation has awarded Internationalisation Fellowships to 23 young, ambitious researchers at postdoc level. With these fellowships, the foundation aims to give researchers the opportunity to gain valuable research experience abroad and at the same time provide assurance that they can subsequently continue to work with their research ideas in a Danish research environment.
This is the first time the Carlsberg Foundation has awarded Internationalisation Fellowships for combined research stays abroad and subsequent reintegration at a Danish research institution. The purpose of the fellowships is to strengthen the young talented researchers’ international networks and at the same time ensure that in the longer term they have the opportunity to establish themselves as independent research leaders in Denmark.
Professor Lasse Horne Kjældgaard, CEO, Carlsberg Foundation, says:
“I'd like to congratulate all the recipients of an Internationalisation Fellowship on now having an opportunity, for a certain period, to develop as researchers in an inspiring and academically enhancing research environment abroad without the risk of losing a foothold in the Danish research environment in which they are emerging. When we decided to offer combined foreign stays and reintegration from 2025 and onwards, the ambition was to meet the researchers’ desire for assurance of being able to return to Denmark and continue work on their projects after their research stay abroad. With 116 applications received, we can conclude that the change has been well received by the researchers.”
From studies of atmospheric CO₂ to the relationship between humans and the sea in Nordic literature
The Internationalisation Fellowships awarded comprise 12 within the natural sciences, five within the humanities and six within the social sciences. The research projects, which will run for two to three years, will investigate topics such as:
- how elevated levels of atmospheric CO₂ are affecting forest emissions of organic compounds and their atmospheric oxidation
- hidden political biases that are embedded and find expression in large linguistic models
- how Arctic biodiversity has developed across geological epochs
- how Nordic fiction describes the relationship between humans and the sea
The fellowships have all been awarded in open competition based on applications submitted in response to the spring call 2025.
The Carlsberg Foundation received a total of 116 applications: 64 within the natural sciences, 20 within the humanities and 32 within the social sciences.
This year, 44 applications were submitted by female applicants and 69 by male applicants, while three applications were submitted by applicants with another gender. The awards comprise seven for female researchers, 15 for male researchers, and one for a researcher with another gender.
Three postdoctoral fellowships for research at the Danish Institute in Rome
In addition to the Internationalisation Fellowships, the Carlsberg Foundation has allocated DKK 4 million for three postdoctoral fellowships for research at the Danish Institute in Rome. These fellowships were also awarded in open competition based on applications submitted in response to the spring call 2025.
