What?
EMBARC investigates the environmental impacts of Arctic cruise ship tourism from a legal perspective. It explores the law-science interface on this topic, assessing how science can be integrated into law and how such integration can be strengthened to advance the regulation.
Why?
As Arctic cruise ship tourism is increasing due to global warming, it harms biodiversity, threatens indigenous communities, and worsens climate change. Yet, regulations remain weak. With time running out, effective regulation, one that relies on science, is crucial. The findings will be valuable for researchers, policymakers, industry actors, indigenous communities, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
How?
EMBARC uses the law-science interface as its underlying theoretical framework to study the regulation of Arctic cruise ship tourism. Regarding methods, it employs doctrinal legal research to map and analyze existing regulations and identify legal gaps. Further, it conducts empirical research, namely semi-structured interviews with regulatory state and non-state actors.
