We are experiencing a shift towards more environmentally friendly computing facilities fueled by Graphics Processor Units (GPUs). When compared with standard Central Processing Units (CPUs), GPUs are much better optimized for throughput and performance per watt, increasing computing density while decreasing the amount of power consumed. This Carlsberg Infrastructure grant will make it possible to acquire a GPU server to efficiently run state-of-the-art computer codes developed at the Niels Bohr Institute to investigate gas and dust dynamics in protoplanetary disks where planets form with unprecedented capabilities. Our GPU-accelerated codes will enable us to explore by means of massive and efficient simulations the vast range of physical conditions characterizing the birthplace of planets.
