Catalysis will play a key role in many of the grand challenges of our time, including securing the transition of our society to rely on renewable energy. However, for many of the reactions completely new types of catalysts are needed. This project will investigate catalysts consisting of just one, two or three atoms. Specifically, the aim is to image these catalysts with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM), which allows for resolving the atomic structure of the catalysts including bonding to the support. This project will greatly increase the fundamental understanding this new type of catalyst that could overcome limitations of the catalysts we have today.
