Resumé

Electrospray Ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry (MS) is a cornerstone characterization and detection method for wide variety of compounds. It gives precise information about the molecular weight of ions that are transferred from solution to the gas phase in the electrospray process. This is a bit like spray painting: Eventually all the solvent is removed and all that is left is the molecular ion that was dissolved. This is then "weighed" to give precise information about its atomic composition and charge. ESIMS is used daily at the Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Pharmacy to characterize new materials like drug candidates. The funding is for replacing a 13 year old out dated instrument. This equipment is essential for many research projects, for publishing, and for education.
