In situ determination of rates and pathways of microbial transformations in oxygen-depleted waters

We will construct a unique, novel instrument that conducts experiments in situ in the interior of the ocean. In situ operation overcomes the biases, such as oxygen contamination, associated to traditional sample recovery and laboratory experiments. The first application will be determination of how microbes produce N2O in oxygen-depleted waters that are a strong source of this greenhouse gas.
