Carving the Individual

The conference aims to offer new perspectives in the study of rock-cut portrait sculpture in the Near East between 2nd c. BC‒AD 3rd c., by focusing on aspects of regionality and international connectivity. By focusing on contextual analysis, it will shed light on the negotiations of identities seen in the portraits and how they differed from established portrait traditions in the Roman world.
