Hvad?
Principal investigator team: • Professor Mogens Christensen, University of Aarhus • Professor Rasmus Bjørk, Technical University of Denmark • Professor Cathrine Frandsen, Technical University of Denmark We will research how to realize a novel magnet consisting of a nano-composite of two magnetic materials that together have properties that are more than the sum of their parts. One of these will be a novel semi-hard magnetic material that is ideal for exactly this type of nano-composite. This arduous academic challenge requiring an interdisciplinary approach.
Hvorfor?
The world is in dire need of a new magnetic material for two reasons. First, the best magnets today contain heavy rare earth elements that are subject to severe geopolitical issues. Secondly, all green technologies are limited in the usefulness by magnets. Realizing a new permanent magnet with “just” double the magnetic strength would make wind turbines and electric cars 70-100% more powerful.
Hvordan?
We will extensively use in situ techniques, both new and recently developed for novel material synthesis, and characterization to directly follow and control structure and magnetic properties. Combined with input from theoretical modelling this will allow us to make a nanocomposite structured over many length scales to produce a magnet with properties twice as good as the best magnets today.
