Hvad?

This project explores how medieval Arabic philosophers, like Avicenna and Averroes, engaged with Aristotle's works. It focuses on how they sometimes referenced Aristotle's ideas but interpreted or even contradicted them. The goal is to understand the role of these commentaries in balancing preservation and innovation in philosophy.

Hvorfor?

By studying these commentaries, we can better appreciate how Arabic philosophers didn't just transmit Greek ideas but also adapted and expanded upon them. This research highlights their contributions to philosophy as active participants in shaping thought, not just as preservers of Greek philosophy.

Hvordan?

The project involves a close reading of Arabic commentaries, comparing them to the original Greek texts. It examines how references to Aristotle are used, identifying differences and exploring whether they stem from translation challenges or intentional innovation. Findings will be shared through academic articles, workshops and communicated more broadly as introductions on Arabic philosophy
