Is acoustic communication in fishes mediated by particle motion or sound pressure?

We elucidate if coral reef fishes use the particle motion or the sound pressure components of the sound field to receive communication signals from one another. We record and film fishes producing and responding to sounds at different ranges on a coral reef and perform transmission loss experiments to understand how the various components of the sounds field deteriorate with distance.
