The two-volume book includes an analysis of literacy and the use of epigraphic writing among the Medieval population in Denmark: the aristocracy and the clergy as well as ordinary people like craftsmen, farmers and the village priest. The book presents the first analysis in Denmark of runic as well as Roman letter epigraphic texts to sort out the complicated pattern of a two-script community.
