Paper Trails: The Historical Patient Journal Database (HiJo)

This project builds a digital database of Danish hospital records from the late 19th and early 20th century. Using Large Language Models for transcription, we unlock rich medical data from handwritten patient journals. The result is a unique resource supporting research across disciplines from the social context of disease to public health and disease progression in a life before modern medicine.
